It is important to know what to take and what to leave behind when coming to Roatan. Here is our list of the most important things to bring.

Definitely Bring

1. Reef Safe Sunscreen

Why Bring?

Roatan is a tropical paradise and for the most part that is a very good thing for visitors, but it also means that the sun can bite hard. Sunscreen with SPF-30 and up provides enough protection from the sun for most skin types, just make sure that it is reef safe since chemicals in sunscreen can damage our reefs.

Why Bring?

If you booked a beach add-on, the hotel will provide you with a large beach towel. However for all other activities, you will need to dry off the water and sweat. A medium to large towel will go a long way.

Why Bring?

No trip to Roatan is complete without enjoying the amazing turquoise waters. You will need a bathing suit to enjoy this since the nudist beach (Paya Bay) is real far away.

Why Bring?

Some aerosol mosquito repellents have deet and chemicals that damage the reef once you enter the water. Reef safe repellents protect you and our marine ecosystem.

Why Bring?

The US dollar is widely accepted in most if not all businesses across the island, we recommend you bring small denominations for small purchases and gratuities you wish to make.

May Want to Consider

Now there are some items that are not a must, but are quite helpful
1. Hat

Why Bring?

More than a fashion statement, hats will provide much needed shade and protection from the sun for both ladies and gentlemen. Also equally good are caps. Both types of head-wear can be bought on the island.

Why Bring?

Rashguards are simply amazing. They are breathable fabrics that apart from being cool, they block out harmful UV rays and help you stay protected.

Why Bring?

We get it. There is nothing like traveling in comfortable sandles, but you know what is not comfortable? That’s hitting your big toe into a coconut or large rock. Water shoes provide protection and comfort for both land and beach.

Definetly DO NOT BRING

These items you want to keep on the ship or at home
1. Sweater

Why NOT Bring?

Travel light, but be prepared. Even during rain season, sweaters are overkill. They are heavy and don’t provide protection against the rain. If it gets real wet, use a poncho provided by the ship and leave the heavy clothing in your room.

Why NOT Bring?

Even the most hardcore of activitties in Roatan do not require heavy boots or protective footware. We recommend sticking to sneakers, water shoes or sandals. The boots will not combine well with the heat, humidity and rain (during rainy season).

Why NOT Bring?

Saltwater can corrode gold-plated and other precious metals causing corrosion and minor scratches. Not only that, but while you are having fun, your precious jewelry can fall  and become lost. Rings become lost all the time specially in West Bay and West End.

Why NOT Bring?

Starting in 2025 and 2026, the government of Honduras will block all entry of these products at airports and cruise ships. We understand spearfishing is a fun sport for some, but our reef is the life blood of Roatan and it is best to protect these animals than to hunt them. We recommend you schedule a visit during Lion Fish hunting championships to best enjoy yourself.
